Meeting psychotherapist Roman Budaev

A conversation about a path through medicine — towards understanding who actually heals.

Roman Budaev ·

People often ask me to tell them about myself briefly. It never works: after twenty-five years in medicine there are no brief stories left. So let this be a conversation instead.

Why did you leave conventional medicine?

I never left it. I stayed — I simply stopped pretending that a blood test explains a person. Six years at university, a residency in paediatric neurology, then general medicine, surgery, gastroenterology. I saw hundreds of patients whose results were “all normal” while living had become unbearable.

Doctor, I have had every test done. They say I am healthy.

And do you feel healthy?

No. For about ten years now.

That “no” is where the real work begins. A symptom is not a breakdown, it is a message. The only question is whether anyone is willing to read it.

It is not the method that heals. It is the person standing behind it.

What happens at the first meeting

We talk. No questionnaires, no protocol-driven “tell me about your childhood”. I need to hear how your life is arranged now and at what point it stopped working for you. That is usually enough to see the direction.

Then comes the work: through word, attention and presence. Some call it psychotherapy, others healing. My patients call it relief.
